Improved agricultural practices for high value medicinal plant
under mid to high altitude situation

Abstract: The population of the following endangered medicinal plants in Darjeeling, Sikkim, India, was studied during 2009-11: Nardostachys grandiflora [N. jatamansi], Gentiana kurroo, Podophyllum hexandrum, Picrorhiza kurroa, Swertia chirayita, Gloriosa superba and Abutilon indicum. Podophyllum hexandrum had the lowest population density (0.46 plant/m2), followed by Abutilon indicum (0.86 plant/m2), Picrorhiza kurroa (1.02 plant/m2), Gloriosa superba (1.19 plant/m2), Gentiana kurroo (1.33 plant/m2), Nardostachys grandiflora (1.64 plant/m2) and Swertia chirayita 14.03 plants/m2. Best management practices crop establishment and management, harvesting, processing, packaging and transport for these crops are presented.
